Yohuno engages NYPD, strengthens Ghana-U.S. Policing Cooperation

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Ghana, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, on Tuesday visited the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Headquarters at One Police Plaza, holding high-level discussions with NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and her executive command team.
The meeting was part of IGP Yohuno’s ongoing U.S. law-enforcement partnership tour, aimed at enhancing collaboration between the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and the NYPD.
Discussions focused on advancing cooperation in technology-driven policing, counterterrorism, intelligence-led operations, and urban crime prevention. Commissioner Tisch briefed the Ghanaian delegation on NYPD’s sophisticated public safety infrastructure, including integrated surveillance cameras, real-time crime centres, and drone technology.
During a live demonstration, IGP Yohuno observed how drones and camera networks are deployed in real time to monitor incidents, track suspects, and support proactive crime prevention across New York City. Impressed by the technology, he stated: “Seeing how the NYPD employs drone and camera technology to prevent crime in real time underscores how critical technology has become to modern policing. The Ghana Police Service is committed to leveraging similar smart policing tools to make our communities safer, more secure, and more resilient.”
Both leaders also agreed to explore the exchange placement of officers between the two agencies. Under the proposed arrangement, an NYPD officer could be assigned to the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra, while the GPS would post a liaison officer to NYPD’s Regional Intelligence Support Centre in New York City. The initiative is expected to strengthen intelligence sharing, operational coordination, and professional development for both agencies.
Commissioner Tisch commended Ghana’s leadership in regional security and affirmed the NYPD’s readiness to expand cooperation through training and operational partnerships. The engagement concluded with a guided tour of the NYPD Joint Operations and Counterterrorism Centres, offering the Ghanaian delegation insights into how technology and interagency collaboration drive effective public safety.
The visit followed IGP Yohuno’s earlier meeting at the FBI New York Field Office, which focused on cybercrime, transnational fraud investigations, and counterterrorism collaboration. Both visits, facilitated by the FBI Legal Attaché Office in Accra and supported by the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, highlight the growing U.S.–Ghana security partnership and the shared commitment to addressing evolving global threats through innovation and collaboration.
