Decap GETFund for more access into tertiary education – Dr. Apaak to Gov’t

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak has advised the government to decap the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) in order to create more access to tertiary education.

Commenting on in Parliament recently, the deputy ranking Member on the Education Committee highlighted some challenges that the government must consider in order to decap the GETFund.

“Mr. Speaker one of the issues I want to highlight is captured on page four of the report, on table four there are indications on the number of completed projects as of 31^st December 2023.

“Mr. Speaker, it is instructive to note that in the tertiary sector is only one project that is indicated to have been completed between 2017 and the present. Mr. Speaker this is very worrisome. It is worrisome because we have increased the number of students who are accessing secondary education,” Dr. Apaak stated.

He further stated that the Africa Education Watch (EduWatch) report on the enrollment of students into the tertiary is way below which the government must not turn a blind eye to.

“Logically, these students we expect to progress to the tertiary level and yet we don’t seem to apply a reasonable quantum of resources to increase access at the tertiary level. In fact, a recent report by Africa Education Watch indicates that only 39 percent of students who have gone through secondary school take up places in the tertiary sector.

“So as other Members have indicated we ought to take another look at this formula and we ought to continue to make the argument to justify the decapping of GetFund so that we can increase educational infrastructure at the tertiary level. For the millions of students that are passing the secondary system,” he added.
