Queiroz bids farewell to Ghanaians following World Cup exit

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has bid an emotional farewell to Ghanaians after the national team’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026 following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
The Portuguese coach shared a heartfelt message on social media shortly after Ghana’s Round of 32 exit, thanking the Ghana Football Association, his players, staff and supporters for their trust and commitment during his time in charge.
Reflecting on the team’s journey, Queiroz encouraged Ghanaians to view the World Cup campaign as part of a broader process of growth rather than a failure.
“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn,” he wrote.
Queiroz said he was leaving with pride over the progress made during his tenure while acknowledging that expectations would always remain high.
“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions,” he stated.
The 73-year-old also stressed that the long-term success of the Black Stars would depend on more than performances on the field, urging greater investment in the structures that nurture Ghana’s football talent.
“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent,” he said.
Queiroz expressed appreciation to the Ghana Football Association leadership for the opportunity to lead the national team.
“To my President and Board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honor and privilege to serve the Country and the Black Stars,” he added.
He also paid tribute to the players and technical staff for their commitment throughout the campaign before addressing the fans.
“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage.”
Ghana’s World Cup journey ended on July 4, 2026, after a narrow 1-0 loss to Colombia at Kansas City Stadium in Missouri. Midfielder Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute to send Colombia into the Round of 16.
Colombia controlled much of the contest with 61 percent possession and completed 532 accurate passes compared with Ghana’s 312. Despite keeping the scoreline close, the Black Stars struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities and finished the match without registering a single shot on target.
Queiroz ended his message with a note of optimism, writing: “Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future.”
