America@250: Ghana-US relations remain stronger than ever – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has said Ghana and the United States continue to enjoy strong bilateral relations as America marks its 250th Independence Anniversary.
The message was contained in a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed for distribution to media organisations.
It said President Mahama had extended congratulations and goodwill on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana to United States President Donald J. Trump and the American people as they celebrated the historic milestone.
The United States officially turned 250 years old on July 4, 2026, marking its semiquincentennial since the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776. Celebrations were held across the country to commemorate the occasion and rededicate citizens to the nation’s founding ideals.
According to the statement, Ghana and the United States have maintained cordial relations since Ghana attained independence in 1957.
It recalled that the United States sent an official delegation led by then Vice President Richard Nixon to Ghana’s independence celebrations, accompanied by civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and diplomat Ralph Bunche.
The Ministry said those early engagements laid a strong foundation for relations between the two countries, with the United States becoming one of the first nations to establish diplomatic ties with Ghana in 1957.
It noted that cooperation has expanded significantly over the past seven decades through landmark initiatives, including the Akosombo Dam, the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), the Millennium Challenge Compact, the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), as well as collaboration in education, health, trade and investment.
In his congratulatory message, President Mahama expressed confidence that the longstanding partnership would continue to flourish.
“As we join in the celebration of another milestone, it is my deep conviction that the enduring friendship and cooperation between our two countries will continue to be shaped by values and common interests, especially in the areas of the rule of law, human rights and democracy, as well as our shared aspiration for economic prosperity, which fosters a close and enduring partnership between Ghana and the United States,” he said.
President Mahama also wished the United States “a peaceful, joyous and successful 250th anniversary celebration.”
The statement further highlighted decades of high-level exchanges between the two countries, describing the people-to-people relationship between Ghanaians and Americans as an important pillar that continues to strengthen cultural and diplomatic cooperation.
