Sammy Crabbe raises doubt over NPP restructuring, unity efforts

Former second national vice chair of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Crabbe, has raised doubts over the effectiveness of the party’s ongoing restructuring and unity efforts.
In an interview, Mr. Crabbe said the NPP’s restructuring and unity efforts, though well-intentioned, might not fully achieve their purpose unless they are matched with the right leadership approach and broader participation.
He noted that the restructuring and unity agenda required careful implementation to ensure that all members of the party felt represented and motivated to work together for the future.
The NPP has introduced a number of reforms following its defeat in the 2024 general elections. These include the granting of amnesty to suspended members, the expansion of its delegate base, and the passage of 54 motions at its national delegates conference on Saturday, July 19, all designed to prepare the party ahead of the 2028 elections. The party has also scheduled the election of a presidential flagbearer for January 2026.
Mr. Crabbe observed that while these steps marked progress, the success of the restructuring and unity measures would depend on the experience, vision, and capacity of those leading the process.
According to him, identifying the root causes of the party’s challenges and addressing them effectively remained essential.
He further indicated that the NPP needed to first strengthen its internal structures and inspire confidence among its members. He suggested that without such assurance, the restructuring and unity agenda might face setbacks.
On the question of the upcoming flagbearer election, Mr. Crabbe said choosing a leader was necessary, but it should go hand-in-hand with institutional reforms that can hold the party together. In his view, prioritizing a flagbearer alone may not guarantee lasting unity.
Mr. Crabbe also urged the party to rebuild public trust by demonstrating transparency and consistency in its decision-making. He added that giving members a strong sense of belonging would help strengthen the NPP ahead of future elections.
Meanwhile, campaign activities continue to intensify within the party as supporters of flagbearer aspirants step up their mobilization efforts ahead of the primaries.
