Afenyo-Markin pledges loyalty to Bawumia

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has pledged unreserved loyalty to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging unity as the NPP targets electoral recovery ahead of 2028.
The assurance was given during a courtesy call by the Minority caucus of Parliament on Monday, shortly after Dr. Bawumia’s election as the party’s flag bearer.
Afenyo-Markin framed the meeting as a reset moment for cohesion, direction and collective responsibility within the caucus and the wider party.
“As a leader of the caucus, let me also personally pledge to you my unsoiled loyalty to the cause of the party and your vision.
“If we don’t push your agenda, nobody’s agenda can go through,” he said, stressing that the caucus had resolved to actively drive the flag bearer’s vision. “So it is very clear on our minds that we need to push this agenda.”
He disclosed that the Minority would maintain constant engagement with the flag bearer’s office for guidance, contrasting the new phase with what he described as a period of uncertainty.
“We’ve also undertaken to regularly engage the office in every single thing we do for direction,” he noted. “Because you may recall that last year, there was no direction.”
With Dr. Bawumia now as the party’s anchor, the Minority Leader said members could look up to clear leadership.
“But with you now, as anchor man, we can look up to you for vision and direction,” he added, before making a personal commitment: “As a leader of the caucus, let me also personally pledge to you my unsoiled loyalty to the cause of the party and your vision.”
Afenyo-Markin placed the task ahead in stark numerical terms, recalling the party’s parliamentary strength over time.
“Each one of us here, 87 of us, in 2017 were 169 and reduced to 137 plus one. And we are now 87,” he said, underscoring the challenge. “Our duty is to lift up the numbers come 2028.”
He warned against factionalism, insisting that success would depend on teamwork rather than individual effort.
“Individualism can only spell our doom,” he cautioned. “If the flag bearer as an individual is expected to do it all, there will be no success.”
Calling for discipline and shared purpose, he urged colleagues to take the campaign to their constituencies.
“We will go to our various constituencies and we must win for him,” Afenyo-Markin said, appealing for unity to ensure the party emerges victorious.
