Akufo-Addo-Bawumia’s gov’t has made Ghana bad model of democracy – Mahama

Presidential Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has asserted that the country has become a poor model of democracy under President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s government for other countries who looked up to Ghana.

This stems from the appointments of some alleged political figures to the courts and outcomes of some public interest cases in the country.

Addressing a rally at Bimbila on the second day of his tour of the Northern Region, the former President stated that Ghana was once seen as a model of democracy but in recent years, its judicial system has been compromised

Mr. Mahama further accused the government of what he termed as “global disappointment.”

“I travel around the world. I am invited to various places to attend conferences, to be an election monitor, and to give lectures at various universities. Anywhere I go, the question people outside Ghana ask me is, Ghana, what happened to you? Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana, what happened to you? Everybody looked up to Ghana as the model of democracy.” he stated.

He continued, “Today we are a bad model of democracy. Our judiciary is not independent. All our state institutions have been destroyed. People looked up to Ghana as a country that has a model of economic management. Today, our economy is in shambles, and the people who came and said that they were coming so that our economy would be better. Today our economy is worse. We are in debt. There is hardship in the land, prices of goods and services are rising every day and yet every day they come and tell us we should clap for them, they’ve done well. How can we clap for you?”.
