Asamoah Gyan turns 40 today
Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan celebrates his 40th birthday on 22 November 2025, marking another milestone in a blessed life journey.
Born on 22 November 1985 in Accra, Gyan rose through the ranks of Liberty Professionals before becoming one of Africa’s most iconic strikers.
Over his international career, he earned more than 100 caps for Ghana and scored 51 goals, making him the country’s all-time top scorer.
One of Gyan’s most remarkable records is that he became the first player ever to score in nine consecutive major international tournaments, a streak spanning across both FIFA World Cups and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Here’s how that streak unfolded:
2006 World Cup (Germany)
2008 AFCON
2010 AFCON
2010 World Cup (South Africa)
2012 AFCON
2013 AFCON
2014 World Cup (Brazil)
2015 AFCON
2017 AFCON
Beyond that, Gyan is Africa’s highest-scoring player in World Cup history, with six goals across three tournaments (2006, 2010, 2014).
His impact at major tournaments is matched by his club success. He played for top clubs in Europe and the Middle East, including Udinese, Modena, Rennes, Sunderland, and Al Ain, and collected several domestic titles and individual honors.
Gyan also made headlines in 2010 during the World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay, when he had a chance to send Ghana to the semi-finals via a penalty, but missed in extra time.
Despite that setback, he remained a symbol of resilience and leadership in the Black Stars camp.
On the continental stage, Gyan made history in AFCON too, becoming the first player to score in six consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments
This streak spans through 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015,
and 2017.
His achievements have earned him numerous awards, including BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2010 and places in CAF Teams of the Year.
Off the pitch, Gyan has embarked on business and creative ventures, and is remembered for his passion, flair, and commitment, both at home and abroad.
As he marks his 40th birthday, fans across Ghana and Africa remember fondly his immense contribution to football.
