Boakye Agyarko declares NPP chairmanship intention

Former Energy Minister, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has officially declared his intention to contest the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He described his decision as a “call to duty” to strengthen the governing party and respond to the expectations of its grassroots.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Mr. Agyarko explained that the decision followed careful reflection and extensive consultations.
“I have had consultations with members of my family and those who are very close to me, and whose lives would be most affected by the decisions I make,” he said.
“I have also listened carefully to what the broad masses of our party people, and indeed many outside our party, are asking of me.”
He stressed that after weighing the views of his family, associates, and party supporters, he felt compelled to step forward.
“Having factored in all the considerations, I see it as my bounden duty to respond to this call to duty, and hereby announce that I will contest for the position of National Chairman of my party upon the opening of nominations,” Mr. Agyarko declared.

Boakye Agyarko is a long-standing figure in the NPP, having served as Energy Minister in the first term of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. His tenure in 2017–2018 placed him at the center of critical energy reforms, though it was not without controversy. Prior to that, he worked in the banking sector and was known as a key policy strategist for the party.
