Boankra Port a ‘game-changer’ for Ghana’s economy – Asiedu Nketia

The Boankra logistics terminal could transform Ghana’s trade, says Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
The Board Chairman of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) made the remarks during a working visit to the project site at Boankra in the Ejisu Constituency of the Ashanti Region, where officials assessed progress and identified implementation bottlenecks.
“This is not just another infrastructure project. It represents a shift in how Ghana manages trade and logistics,” he said.
The visit formed part of a joint inspection exercise involving the Ghana Shippers Authority, with the delegation touring key facilities, including sections of the container terminal and container freight station.
The Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal is a major inland port project aimed at bringing cargo handling services closer to businesses in central and northern Ghana, while reducing congestion at the country’s seaports.
Mr Asiedu Nketia stressed that Ghana must rethink its growth strategy to remain competitive in global trade.
“Ghana can no longer depend solely on traditional economic pathways if it wants to remain competitive,” he stated.
He expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work but emphasised that timely completion remains critical to unlocking the project’s full benefits.
“The real impact will only be felt when the project is fully operational,” he noted.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Ransford Edward Gyampo, described the project as vital for improving trade facilitation and strengthening Ghana’s position as a transit hub for landlocked countries.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Justmoh Construction Limited, Justice Amoh, appealed for additional financial support to sustain progress and prevent delays.
“While steady progress has been made, more funding is needed to maintain momentum and avoid delays,” he said.
Providing a technical update, the project consultant, John Bernard Koranteng Yorke, indicated that major structural works have largely been completed, with ongoing installations progressing steadily.
He noted that earlier logistical and funding challenges have been addressed through improved coordination among stakeholders, leading to faster execution of remaining tasks.
When completed, the Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal is expected to ease port congestion, reduce transportation costs, create jobs and boost trade within Ghana and across neighbouring landlocked countries.
