Carlos Queiroz arrives in Ghana to hero’s welcome

New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz touched down at Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday evening to a rousing reception.
Officials of the Ghana Football Association, alongside enthusiastic supporters, had gathered hours ahead of his arrival, filling the atmosphere with songs and chants in anticipation.
Upon stepping out, Queiroz was presented with a bouquet of flowers and draped in a tourism sash, symbolic of Ghanaian hospitality.
He received the gesture with a broad smile, acknowledging the warm welcome from fans and officials alike.
The new Black Stars head coach is expected to address the media on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Alisa Hotel.
The press conference, scheduled for 1:00 PM, was announced via the Black Stars’ official social media platforms, marking his first formal engagement with the Ghanaian media since taking up the role.
The interaction is anticipated to shed light on his immediate plans, technical direction, and preparations ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in June.
Journalists are also expected to seek clarity on team selection, tactical philosophy, and expectations surrounding Ghana’s campaign.
Last week, the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association confirmed Queiroz’s appointment as head coach of the Black Stars following consultations with key stakeholders aimed at strengthening the team’s technical setup.
Queiroz brings a wealth of experience, having managed national teams across several continents, including Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Colombia, Qatar, Oman, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
At club level, he has handled top sides such as Real Madrid and Sporting CP, and also served as assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.
His World Cup pedigree remains notable, having guided South Africa to qualification in 2002, led Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran at three consecutive tournaments in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
Ghana will open its 2026 World Cup campaign on June 17 against Panama in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in a challenging group, with the tournament kicking off on June 11 across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Attention now turns to how quickly Queiroz can shape the squad and implement his philosophy as preparations gather momentum.
