Ghanaians will fire you if you fail – Songo to Carlos Queiroz

Renowned Ghanaian sports journalist Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Countryman Songo, has warned new Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz to deliver results or risk dismissal.
The remarks were made during a press conference marking Queiroz’s first engagement with the Ghanaian media since his appointment last week.
Songo, known for his blunt analysis, addressed the Portuguese coach directly, cautioning him about the high expectations that come with the role.
“Everyone here is happy but if you fail, they will fire you. You should take note,” he said, drawing reactions from the room.
He also questioned whether Queiroz could surpass Ghana’s best FIFA World Cup performance, achieved in 2010 when the Black Stars reached the quarter-final stage.
In response, Queiroz indicated that his focus is on winning matches and expressed confidence in the quality and potential of the team.
The veteran coach further engaged the audience, conveying his readiness for the task ahead and urging supporters and journalists to match his level of commitment as preparations intensify.
His remarks signalled a willingness to embrace the challenge, as expectations continue to build around his tenure.
The Ghana Football Association has reportedly handed Queiroz a short-term contract focused on the upcoming World Cup campaign.
A day earlier, Queiroz arrived at Kotoka International Airport to a rousing welcome from football officials and fans who had gathered hours in advance.
He was presented with a bouquet of flowers and draped in a tourism sash, gestures he acknowledged with a broad smile.
Queiroz brings vast experience, having managed several national teams including Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Colombia, Qatar, Oman, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
At club level, he has handled top sides such as Real Madrid and Sporting CP, and also served as assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.
His World Cup credentials include guiding South Africa to qualification in 2002, leading Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managing Iran at three consecutive tournaments in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
Ghana will begin its 2026 World Cup campaign on June 17 against Panama in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in what is expected to be a difficult group.
With the tournament set to kick off on June 11 across Canada, Mexico and the United States, attention now turns to how quickly Queiroz can shape his squad and deliver results.
