Disputes in NPP constituency elections: African Electoral Institute calls for amicable resolution

The African Electoral Institute (AEI) has called on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to resolve outstanding disputes arising from the party’s just-ended constituency executive elections.

The call follows the nationwide elections held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, to elect new constituency executives across the country.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 14, the AEI said it had taken note of the “successful conduct” of the elections but clarified that it did not deploy observers to the exercise but rather, “secondary observation of official party reports and media coverage of the elections.”

According to the NPP, elections were held in 245 out of 276 constituencies, representing an 88.7 per cent success rate.

The party described the exercise as largely peaceful, with delegates electing new executives to lead party affairs at the constituency level across the 16 regions.

The NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, commended party members for their “discipline and commitment”, which he said contributed to the largely peaceful conduct of the polls.

However, the AEI noted that some challenges were reported in several constituencies, including 23 constituencies where elections were put on hold due to disputes.

It also cited Ningo Prampram, Atwima Mponua, Obuasi West and Trobu as constituencies where elections could not be held due to last-minute challenges.

The Institute further noted that court injunctions restrained the conduct of elections in Tema East and Tema Central.
It also highlighted reported procedural concerns and disagreements over delegate albums, including a disruption in Bantama which allegedly resulted in the destruction of electoral materials and the arrest of suspects.

The NPP has indicated that its National Steering Committee will review activities in Afigya Sekyere East, Adansi Asokwa, Bantama and Asante Akyem Central before determining the way forward.

The AEI described the constituency elections as “an important step” in the NPP’s internal reorganisation and preparation ahead of future political contests.

“In view of the reported disputes and pending cases, AEI calls on the leadership of the NPP to amicably resolve all outstanding disputes,” the statement said.

The AEI also encouraged the party to uphold “internal democratic principles, due process, and dialogue” to preserve party unity and the integrity of its structures.

The Institute reaffirmed its commitment to supporting democratic governance and credible internal party processes across Africa.
