African Electoral Institute calls for calm, dialogue over unresolved NPP constituency elections

The African Electoral Institute (AEI) has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to resolve all outstanding disputes arising from its recently concluded constituency executive elections through dialogue and due process.
The civil society organisation made the appeal in a statement issued on Monday after reviewing reports on the elections, which were held from July 11 to July 12, 2026, under the supervision of the Electoral Commission across 385 designated voting centres nationwide.
AEI acknowledged the NPP’s announcement that elections were successfully conducted in 245 out of 276 constituencies, representing an 88.7% success rate, and described the exercise as largely peaceful despite isolated disruptions.
In its statement, the institute said, “AEI calls on the leadership of the NPP to amicably resolve all outstanding disputes in the affected constituencies.”
It further urged the party to rely on internal democratic mechanisms, saying, “AEI further encourages the party to uphold internal democratic principles, due process, and dialogue to preserve party unity and the integrity of its structures.”
The organisation noted that while voting proceeded smoothly in most constituencies, some areas experienced setbacks, including constituencies where elections were suspended over disputes, last-minute challenges, court injunctions, and disagreements over delegate albums.
AEI also referenced the reported disruption in Bantama, where electoral materials were destroyed and suspects arrested, as well as the NPP’s decision to review events in Afigya Sekyere East, Adansi Asokwa, Bantama and Asante Akyem Central before deciding on the next course of action.
The institute said it recognises the constituency elections as a significant milestone in the NPP’s internal reorganisation ahead of future political contests.
It also commended party members for the generally peaceful conduct of the exercise, noting that the process reflected the importance of internal democratic participation.
The NPP nationwide constituency executive elections were held over the weekend of July 11 and 12, with delegates electing new constituency executives to steer the affairs of the party. The Electoral Commission supervised the internal polls across 385 voting centres, while a number of constituencies were unable to complete the process due to disputes and legal challenges.
