Education sector ahead of manifesto implementation – Mahama lauds Haruna, Dr. Apaak
President John Dramani Mahama has praised the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and his deputy, Dr. Clement Apaak, for their exceptional leadership in driving major reforms and delivering on the government’s education-related manifesto commitments ahead of schedule.
Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities Initiative at the Accra College of Education on Friday, October 24, 2025, President Mahama commended the education team for what he described as “proactive and inclusive leadership” that has positioned the sector as a frontrunner in the government’s development agenda.
“Let me thank Haruna and his team in the education sector, and to commend and congratulate you for the hard work that you have done to realise most of the promises we put in the 2024 Manifesto,” President Mahama said. “We have a Manifesto dashboard where we track the promises we made, and I must say the education sector is very ahead in terms of implementation. You, Apaak, and your team GITEC, GETFund, all of you, I just want to say Ayekoo.”
President Mahama’s remarks came as he unveiled sweeping policy and legislative reforms to modernise Ghana’s disability rights framework and expand access to education for persons with disabilities.
He announced that the government will soon introduce a Persons with Disability Act and an accompanying Legislative Instrument (L.I.) to strengthen existing laws, promote inclusion, and ensure effective enforcement.
“We will introduce a Persons with Disability Act and a Legislative Instrument to modernise Ghana’s disability rights regime and ensure effective enforcement,” he stated, adding that the new law will amend the 2006 Act to reflect current realities.
The President said the initiative will be backed by institutional reforms, including district-level disability desks, health resource centres, and upgraded rehabilitation facilities to improve healthcare, education, and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, stressing that accessibility, empowerment, and equality will remain central to Ghana’s education and social policy agenda.
