FIFA World Cup: Ghana book spot in knockout stage ahead of Croatia game

Ghana have qualified for the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 before playing their final Group L match against Croatia.
The Black Stars secured their place in the knockout stage after results elsewhere confirmed that their four points from the opening two matches are enough to progress under FIFA’s expanded 48-team tournament format.
Ghana joins Egypt, England, Portugal and Paraguay as the first five nations to seal qualification before completing their group fixtures.
The Black Stars opened their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama before producing an impressive performance to earn a draw against England.
Those results lifted Ghana to four points, a tally that has now been mathematically confirmed as sufficient to reach the Round of 32 regardless of the outcome against Croatia.
Their qualification was confirmed on Friday after results in Group H altered the qualification permutations, ensuring that no team with four points can be eliminated before the knockout stage.
The expanded World Cup format allows the top two teams from each of the 12 groups to advance automatically, while the eight best third-placed teams also progress. The structure has created scenarios where countries can secure qualification before playing their final group matches.
Although the Black Stars have already booked their place in the next round, Saturday’s clash with Croatia remains significant.
The outcome will determine Ghana’s final position in Group L and could influence the calibre of opponent awaiting them in the Round of 32.
The qualification represents a remarkable response after Ghana’s group-stage exit at the previous FIFA World Cup, with the team showing resilience and discipline throughout this campaign.
A dramatic stoppage-time winner against Panama gave the Black Stars a winning start before they followed it up with a composed display against England to strengthen confidence that the four-time African champions can make a meaningful impact in the tournament.
Ghana are also set to receive a timely boost ahead of the Croatia encounter with the availability of midfielder Thomas Partey, who missed the opening match because of travel documentation issues.
His return is expected to add experience and quality to the Black Stars’ midfield as they seek to finish top of Group L before beginning their knockout-stage campaign.
