Four militiamen killed in JNIM attack near Ghana-Burkina border

Four members of Burkina Faso’s civilian militia, the Volunteers for the Protection of the Fatherland (VDP) were killed Saturday, August 23, in Bittou, a town in the Bawku Municipality near the Ghanaian border.
The attack by the jihadist group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). The assailants also seized the militiamen’s weapons, further highlighting the growing security challenges along the Burkina Faso-Ghana border.
The victims were part of the Volunteers for the Protection of the Fatherland (VDP), a civilian auxiliary force established by the Burkinabe government to support the regular army in countering persistent insurgencies. Military sources familiar with the incident stated that a small VDP team had entered the bush and unexpectedly encountered JNIM fighters. “A small team of VDP went into the bush and encountered bad guys \[Jihadists]. Very wrong,” a source explained.
This recent attack follows a troubling pattern in the region. JNIM, a prominent al-Qaeda affiliate operating in the Sahel, previously claimed responsibility for assaults in June in Mongade near Kulungugu and in March in Garanga, close to Ghana’s Pusiga District. These repeated incursions underscore the volatile security situation along the Burkina Faso-Ghana border and demonstrate the persistent threat posed by jihadist groups in the area.
In response, Burkinabe security and defense forces have launched a coordinated sweep operation along the borders with Ghana and Togo. The operation aims to neutralize insurgent threats, protect civilians, and restore stability to affected communities. Authorities have also warned that the confirmed presence of JNIM near the border increases the risk of the conflict spilling over into neighboring countries, making regional cooperation in security measures critical.
The ongoing efforts by Burkina Faso’s security forces seek to prevent further attacks, secure the border, and reassure local populations. Residents and officials continue to monitor the situation closely as authorities work to contain the threat posed by cross-border jihadist activity in the Sahel region.
