‘We would have reversed helicopter crash disaster if it were possible’ – Asiedu Nketiah

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has once again expressed his deep sorrow over the August 6 helicopter crash in the Ashanti region.
According to him, the NDC party and government would have reversed the tragedy if it were within their power.
Speaking at the funeral of the late Acting National Deputy Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, in Damongo on Sunday, Mr. Nketiah described the incident as one of the darkest moments in the nation’s recent history.
According to him, the loss of Limuna and seven others in the crash has left a vacuum that will be difficult to fill. “If there was anything the NDC — whether in government or as a party — could do to undo this calamity, it would have been done long ago,” he said. “Sadly, no human effort can bring Honourable Limuna back.”
Mr. Nketiah urged Ghanaians to channel their grief into supporting the families left behind. He revealed that President John Mahama had directed the creation of a special fund to cater for the dependents of all the victims, stressing that collective support was crucial at this time.
“What matters now is how we stand with those who have been affected,” he said. “The President’s directive for a welfare fund is aimed at ensuring the families do not struggle alone.”
The NDC Chairman also called for national unity, pointing out that the tragedy had brought people from all walks of life together. He urged Ghanaians to preserve that sense of solidarity beyond the mourning period, describing it as a vital step toward strengthening national cohesion.
The August 6 crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed eight lives, including senior government officials: Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, NDC Vice-Chairman Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three military personnel on board.
Thousands of mourners, including government officials, political figures, traditional leaders, and members of the diplomatic community, gathered in Damongo to honour Alhaji Limuna, who was also known by his traditional title, Sandape-Wura Buwulonso I.
