Four students arrested after violent unrest at Wa Technical Institute

Police have arrested four students following violent disturbances at Wa Technical Institute that resulted in significant property damage.
The Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, told Channel One TV that the chaos erupted when students resisted internal disciplinary measures.
Repeated warnings against the use of unauthorised uniforms and mobile phones were ignored, prompting aggressive reactions from some students.
The unrest quickly escalated, with vandals destroying six vehicles on the school compound and breaking windows at the administration block and multi-purpose hall. DCOP Yiribaare said police arrived promptly to restore order.
In a separate development, the police are investigating the school’s domestic bursar after discovering several food items reportedly in her possession. The case could be forwarded to court if she is found culpable.
DCOP Yiribaare also provided an update on an incident at Saawie on December 5, where officers responding to a complaint were allegedly attacked and disarmed by youth.
Police reinforcements later arrested nine suspects, seven of whom have been arraigned, while two were released following interrogation.
Two weeks ago, Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, visited the school after students’ riot disrupted activities and damaged school property.
Dr. Apaak arrived at the school after receiving a briefing from the Municipal Chief Executive and described the situation as deeply troubling.
“What I’ve seen is very disappointing. The situation is very worrying and it is having an impact on teaching and learning,” he said
According to school authorities, a committee has been established to investigate the incident, which has been described as a clash involving groups of students and external collaborators.
Dr. Apaak stressed that the Ministry of Education will only comment fully after the probe determines the root causes.
The visit brought together key figures, including the Principal of Wa Technical Institute, Adams Saaka; the MCE, Nurah Danwanaa; Dasaana Adamu FShs; and the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare. Security presence on campus has since been reinforced as authorities work to restore calm and resume full academic activity.
