Gabriel’s untimely departure, reminds us of unpredictable nature of Sport – Kofi Adams

Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister of Sports and Recreation, has stated that Gabriel’s untimely departure reminds us of the unpredictable nature of the sport, as he mourns the passing of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who tragically passed away after his contest at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana.
Gabriel, a promising athlete, displayed exceptional talent, passion, and courage in the ring. His untimely departure has not only deprived boxing of an admirable competitor but also serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sport.
As Hon. Adams noted, “Gabriel’s untimely departure not only deprives boxing of an admirable competitor but also reminds us of the unpredictable nature of the sport we passionately love.”
The incident occurred during a scheduled eight-round international light-heavyweight contest against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu, sanctioned by the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA).
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, together with the GBA, has pledged full cooperation to ensure a thorough investigation into the cause of Gabriel’s passing and to support efforts aimed at improving athlete safety.
As the sports community comes to terms with this tragic loss, Hon. Adams’ words resonate deeply: “May we all find solace during this difficult period and continue to work together to safeguard the wellbeing of athletes across the continent.”
