GAF sets up board to probe El-Wak recruitment tragedy
The Acting Minister of Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced the formation of an internal board of inquiry to investigate the stampede that claimed six lives during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.
Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, Dr. Forson expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
He assured that the ministry, in collaboration with the GAF, medical teams, and security agencies, is providing full support to those injured and affected by the tragedy.
“The Ministry of Defence deeply mourns the loss of lives and stands with the affected families. We are working closely with the Armed Forces, medical teams, and law enforcement to ensure the victims receive all necessary assistance,” he said.
He explained that the newly established board will conduct a thorough investigation into the events that led to the stampede, establish accountability, and propose reforms to prevent a recurrence. “The safety and dignity of applicants remain our utmost priority, and we will take every step required to avert such incidents in future recruitment exercises,” Dr. Forson stated.
Although details about the composition of the board and the duration of its work are yet to be released, the Defence Ministry has pledged transparency and swift action once the findings are concluded.
The stampede occurred on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, when thousands of young job seekers gathered at El-Wak Stadium for screening as part of the ongoing nationwide recruitment drive. Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as overcrowding intensified, resulting in several people collapsing.
The Ghana Armed Forces later confirmed six fatalities, while others sustained varying degrees of injury and are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
In response, the GAF has suspended the recruitment exercise in Accra until investigations are completed and safety measures are reviewed to prevent another tragedy.
However, the screening exercises in other regions are scheduled to continue as scheduled.
