Ghana to honour Tsatsu Tsikata’s five-decade legacy at the Bar

Legal icon and academic Tsatsu Tsikata will be celebrated in Accra next week as he marks 50 years of distinguished service at the Ghana Bar. A three-day national event has been lined up in his honour, drawing attention from legal professionals, former students, policymakers, academics, and civil society actors both in Ghana and abroad.
The commemoration will run from Tuesday, August 6 to Thursday, August 8, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre. Each day’s programme will begin at 4:00 p.m. and end at 7:00 p.m., providing a platform for in-depth discussions on Mr. Tsikata’s career and the future of law in Ghana.
Organised under the theme “Celebrating 50 Years of Tsatsu Tsikata at the Ghana Bar – 1975 to 2025,” the event will reflect on the remarkable professional journey of a man who has left an indelible mark on legal scholarship, advocacy, corporate governance, and public discourse.
A Life in Law, Advocacy, and Resistance
The opening day will explore Mr. Tsikata’s legal path, tracing his early contributions to energy and corporate law through his role at the Volta River Authority, his defence of civil liberties during politically turbulent times, and his own legal battles that became defining moments in Ghana’s constitutional history.
Renowned lawyers and former students Thaddeus Sory and Tony Lithur will lead the conversations, offering insider perspectives on Tsikata’s approach to law, justice, and courtroom strategy.
Focus on Legal Education and Mentorship
The second day, August 7, will shift focus to Tsikata’s academic contributions. Widely regarded as one of the most influential lecturers in the history of the University of Ghana School of Law, Mr. Tsikata mentored generations of legal minds who now occupy key positions in national and international institutions.
Diplomat Kwesi Quartey, maritime law expert Prof. Martin Tsamenyi, and legal practitioner Christopher Quaye will share personal testimonies about the intellectual rigour and ethical grounding they received under his tutelage.
The highlight of the day will be a public lecture delivered by Professor Raymond Atuguba, outgoing Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, on “Challenges of Legal Education in Ghana.” The event will be chaired by Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho, former Speaker of Parliament and a former student of Mr. Tsikata.
Broader Reflections on Service and Nationhood
The final day of the celebration, August 8, will reflect on Mr. Tsikata’s contributions beyond the courtroom and classroom. Discussions will examine his roles in constitutional development, public policy, and the pursuit of justice during Ghana’s most politically complex periods.
Sources close to the planning committee say the event is not only a tribute to a singular life of service but also an opportunity to reflect on the values of integrity, intellectual courage, and social responsibility in the practice of law.
Attendance is expected to include senior judges, top legal scholars, political leaders, international guests, and hundreds of former students and associates.
