Ghanaian midfielder brutally attacked by fans after equalizer in Nigeria league match
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) was plunged into turmoil on Saturday after Ghanaian midfielder Nana Kwame Abraham was brutally attacked by fans during a clash between Katsina United and Barau FC.
The violent scenes erupted at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium shortly after Barau FC equalised 1-1 through Orji Kalu in the 69th minute. Moments later, furious Katsina United supporters invaded the pitch, targeting Abraham, who had played a key role in the build-up to the goal.
Eyewitnesses reported that the midfielder was caught and had his throat slit in a shocking act of violence that stunned the football community.
Barau FC confirmed the incident on their official X handle, announcing that the match had been suspended following the attack.
Graphic footage circulating on social media showed Abraham bleeding heavily as officials and teammates tried desperately to assist him amid widespread panic.
Security personnel struggled to contain the chaos as players and officials fled for safety. As of Saturday night, neither the NPFL management nor the Katsina United club had issued an official statement on the incident.
The attack has reignited debate over the growing menace of fan violence and inadequate security at league venues across Nigeria.
The situation has been widely described as a national embarrassment that threatens the credibility and safety of domestic football.
This latest episode of brutality comes just weeks after violent scenes in Kano, deepening concerns about stadium safety and fan control.
According to emerging reports, Abraham survived the assault and is said to be alive and in stable condition, a relief amid an otherwise grim moment for Nigerian football.
Hooliganism has long been a recurring problem in Nigerian football, threatening the safety of players, officials, and fans, and undermining the credibility of the domestic league.
In recent years, the problem has intensified due to weak enforcement of security regulations and poor coordination between clubs and law enforcement agencies.
FIFA maintains a zero-tolerance stance toward hooliganism and any form of violence, discrimination, or disorderly conduct in football.
Its policy framework is grounded in the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the FIFA Stadium Safety and Security Regulations, and its commitment to “Fair Play” principles that emphasize respect, integrity, and safety within the sport.
Under FIFA regulations, the host club or national association bears full responsibility for maintaining order and ensuring safety in and around the stadium.
This includes adequate crowd control and effective coordination with law enforcement before, during, and after matches.
