Godwin Ako Gunn reiterates NDC’s readiness to contest Akwatia by-election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed its participation in the upcoming Akwatia by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025.
In a statement, NDC Deputy National Communications Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, alleged that the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision not to take part in the Tamale Central by-election was a calculated attempt to avoid defeat and win public sympathy ahead of the Akwatia polls.
Describing the move as “the best decision they have taken in recent times,” Mr. Gunn warned against taking the NPP’s withdrawal at face value. He pointed to the Ablekumah North constituency rerun, where the party initially declared it would not contest but “was the first to hit the grounds.”
Mr. Gunn also recalled that the NDC had previously opted out of the Ejisu by-election following the death of then-MP John Kumah.
Providing context on the race, Mr. Gunn explained that the Akwatia seat had been the subject of a legal challenge until Mr. Kumi’s passing, which paved the way for the September 2 vote.
In his statement, Mr. Gunn extended condolences to the family of Ernest Kumi and to the relatives of the eight Ghana Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash, describing them as “the gallant 8 heroes.” He urged party members to be “circumspect in their comments” during the period of mourning.
