Gov’t clears capitation grant arrears for basic schools from 2023 to date

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that the government has settled all outstanding arrears owed to public basic schools under the Capitation Grant, covering the period from 2023 to date.
In a statement dated Wednesday, July 23, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, the GES said the payment marks a significant intervention in support of basic school operations across the country.
“The Ghana Education Service wishes to inform the general public, particularly stakeholders in the basic education sector, that the Government of Ghana has fully settled all outstanding arrears of the Capitation Grant from 2023 to date,” the statement said.
It added that all public basic school heads are to take note and utilise the funds in line with approved guidelines.
According to GES, district and regional monitoring teams will intensify supervision to ensure accountability and value for money.
GES reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to improve learning outcomes, strengthen school management systems, and promote inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all Ghanaian children.
GES also urged District and Regional Directors of Education to ensure strict adherence to the disbursement rules and monitor the utilisation of the funds to promote transparency and accountability.
The Capitation Grant is a government subsidy introduced to support operational expenses in public basic schools. The grant enables school heads to cover minor expenses, including teaching materials, repairs, and administrative needs.
