Gov’t reviews curfew hours in Bawku and Nalerigu to 6pm–6am

The government has revised the curfew hours for both Bawku Municipality in the Upper East Region and Nalerigu Township in the North East Region.

The announcement was made by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP), in a statement issued under the authority of an Executive Instrument.

The decision, taken upon the recommendations of the National and Regional Security Councils, is aimed at containing rising tensions and restoring calm following recent fatal attacks in both areas.

Previously, Nalerigu was under a 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew, while Bawku shared the same timeline after initial enforcement on Sunday, July 27, 2025. The revised schedule now aligns both conflict-prone towns under a uniform 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew, giving residents slightly more flexibility during the day.

The new directive follows a disturbing series of coordinated attacks over the past weekend. At Bawku Senior High School, armed men reportedly stormed the campus and fatally shot a final-year student. Hours later, two students of Nalerigu Senior High School were gunned down in their dormitory under similar circumstances.

The violence sent shockwaves across the regions, prompting the immediate suspension of academic activities in the affected schools. Bawku SHS, which was shut down following the shooting, has scheduled the return of final-year students for August 7 to continue preparations for the WASSCE.

Authorities have since deployed additional security personnel to the two towns and surrounding communities. The Interior Ministry continues to urge residents to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies, as investigations into the attacks remain ongoing.

The government maintains that it is committed to stabilizing the security situation and ensuring that educational institutions and communities return to normalcy as soon as possible.
