Gov’t secures free FIFA World Cup 2026 broadcast for Ghanaians – Kwakye Ofosu

Ghanaians will watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 free on television after the government secured broadcast rights through GBC.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a statement shared on his official Facebook page.
According to the statement, the arrangement is aimed at ensuring that all Ghanaians have access to the world’s biggest football tournament and can follow the Black Stars throughout the competition without the burden of subscription fees.
To achieve nationwide coverage, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has established a National Broadcast Consortium comprising selected television stations across the country.
“In fulfilment of the Government’s commitment to ensuring all Ghanaians have access to the world’s most prestigious football tournament, and to follow the progress of the Black Stars, GBC has established a National Broadcast Consortium for the broadcast of the World Cup matches,” the statement said.
The consortium includes GBC’s television network as well as other participating stations such as Multimedia Group, Media General, EIB Network, Ignite Media, Max TV, Sporty TV, Woezor TV and UTV.
Under the arrangement, participating broadcasters will operate within a shared technical and commercial framework to ensure extensive coverage of the tournament across the country.
The statement noted that the collaboration is expected to maximize access to World Cup content and provide football fans with uninterrupted coverage of the competition.
GBC further indicated that radio stations seeking to air World Cup-related content would be required to obtain sub-licences from the corporation before doing so.
The broadcaster also warned media organizations and individuals against the unauthorized use of FIFA World Cup content.
“GBC, FIFA, and New World TV wish to remind the public and media houses that any unauthorised broadcast, re-broadcast, streaming, public viewing exhibition, or commercial distribution of World Cup content within Ghana is strictly prohibited,” the statement emphasized.
According to GBC, monitoring mechanisms have been put in place to detect and address any violations of the broadcasting rights agreement throughout the tournament.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is expected to attract millions of viewers worldwide, and the latest arrangement is set to give football fans across Ghana the opportunity to watch the tournament free of charge through participating television stations.
