GPRTU, Container Owners protest over CMB Lorry Station sale

Transport unions protest sale of CMB Lorry Station to a local businessman.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Container Owners Association have embarked on a protest against the alleged sale of the CMB Lorry Station to a businessman who also holds a chieftaincy title.
Union leaders argue that the move threatens their business operations, as the CMB Lorry Station is a key source of livelihood for drivers and operators, helping them support their families and pay school fees for their children.
During a visit by Oyerepa News reporter Bernard K. Dadzie, the CMB station was found deserted, with all vehicles parked and no movement. Likewise, the 26 other stations nationwide that operate routes to Accra CMB also suspended operations, and shops within the stations remained closed.
Abass Imoro, Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, led the unions to the Jubilee House to present a petition to President John Dramani Mahama. The petition calls for the President’s intervention in the land dispute surrounding the CMB Lorry Station.
According to the associations, conflicting claims exist over the station’s ownership: the Container Owners Association acquired the land in 1996, while GPRTU has claimed ownership since 1985. The unions insist that resolving the dispute is critical to protecting their livelihoods and ensuring business continuity.
Bridget Otoo, a Presidential Staffer, received the petition and thanked the unions for their peaceful demonstration. She assured the group that the petition would be forwarded to President Mahama for appropriate action.
