GPRTU, four other transport unions declare nationwide shutdown on November 4

Commuters across Ghana could face transport disruptions on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, after the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and four other transport unions announced a nationwide shutdown of commercial vehicle operations.
The unions have directed commercial drivers to park their vehicles for the day until further notice, citing the government’s failure to enforce provisions of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), particularly Regulation 142, as the reason for the planned action.
In a public announcement dated November 1, the unions expressed frustration over what they described as the government’s neglect of L.I. 2519, Regulation 142, which prohibits trading at bus stops and on pedestrian walkways.
They argued that traders continue to occupy designated bus stops, leaving commercial drivers with limited space to pick up and drop off passengers.
The unions also complained that drivers are being fined through the government’s TRAFFITECH-GH traffic monitoring system despite the challenges they face in accessing designated loading points.
According to the unions, it is unfair for drivers to face traffic penalties for operating outside designated stops when traders have occupied the spaces meant for commercial vehicles.
They said the continued situation had left them with no option but to suspend operations until their concerns are addressed.
The planned shutdown has been jointly endorsed by the GPRTU of TUC, Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association and Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.
The unions have apologised to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the action may cause, urging passengers to take note and make alternative travel arrangements ahead of Wednesday.
