GTA assures of full-scale investigation into alleged tourist kidnapping

The Ghana Tourism Authority says a full investigation is underway after a viral video showed Black American visitors alleging kidnapping and extortion by supposed police officers.
The Authority emphasised that both the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have begun “full investigations into the matter,” insisting the claims are receiving the urgency required to establish the facts. “These agencies are handling the issue with the seriousness it deserves,” the statement noted, adding that the public will be informed once the probe is completed.
GTA stressed that despite the circulating video, Ghana remains a dependable destination for international travellers arriving for December events and tourism activities.
According to the Authority, “the country remains a safe and trusted destination,” and its security and hospitality systems have been reinforced ahead of the peak season.
The statement highlighted that thousands of visitors are already in the country, supported by enhanced national security arrangements.
“Our safety systems, backed by law enforcement and tourism partners, guarantee the safety, comfort and peace of mind of all visitors,” the Authority said.
GTA encouraged the public to avoid panic and allow security institutions to complete their work. The Authority appealed to the public to remain measured in their responses while investigations progress. “We urge the public to remain calm and allow the security agencies to complete their investigations,” the statement urged.
Visitors seeking urgent assistance were also advised to contact the GTA through its official hotlines. “Visitors who require assistance are advised to make contact with GTA on 0579799109 or 030 700 7100,” the Authority added, offering additional support through its WhatsApp line.
The Authority ended by reaffirming Ghana’s openness and readiness to host visitors throughout the festive season. “Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety,” the statement assured.
