Helicopter crash: Z-9 helicopters are not substandard – Chinese to Ghanaians

The Chinese Community in Ghana has rejected claims that the Z9 military helicopter, which crashed in the Ashanti Region earlier this month, was substandard.
The Chinese have also warned that such allegations risk undermining relations between Accra and Beijing.
In a statement issued through its lawyers, DKAM Consult, the group said the commentary being circulated in parts of the media and on social platforms lacked evidence and unfairly portrayed Chinese aviation products in a negative light.
The letter emphasized that no official report has been released on the cause of the crash, making it premature to draw conclusions about the quality of the aircraft. It urged the public to exercise restraint until the findings from the Black Box examination are made public by the Ghana Armed Forces.
“The findings from the examination of the Black Box have not, as of this date, been made public by the military authorities who operate and utilize the Z9 helicopter for such bad and disparaging commentaries to be made about it,” the statement said.
The lawyers stressed that misinformation of this nature could have wider implications beyond the military accident. They cautioned that spreading unverified claims not only misleads the Ghanaian public but also strains “the long-standing diplomatic, economic and security cooperation between Ghana and China.”
According to the statement, China has been a reliable development partner to Ghana in key sectors, including defence, infrastructure, and trade. Casting doubt on the integrity of Chinese-made equipment without evidence, it warned, risks creating unnecessary diplomatic tension between the two countries.
The Chinese Community further indicated that individuals or organizations who deliberately spread such claims could face legal action in Ghana. It said such steps were necessary to protect both the reputation of the Ghana Armed Forces and the credibility of Chinese technology.
The caution follows the August 6, 2025, crash of a Ghana Armed Forces Z9 helicopter at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region. The tragedy claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers, while the official cause of the accident remains under investigation.
