I’m the NPP’s best bet for 2028 – Agyepong declares at campaign launch

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has declared his intention to contest the party’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Agyepong stated that he has positioned himself as a reform-minded candidate focused on restoring discipline, unity, and credibility within the NPP.
At a short event in Accra on Tuesday, July 29, just hours after the NPP officially opened nominations for the 2026 presidential primaries, Agyepong outlined his vision for the party. Flanked by former MPs and party stalwarts — including Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye — he emphasized the need for a return to principled leadership.
In his address, the veteran politician urged delegates to reject vote buying and patronage, describing such practices as detrimental to the party’s long-term survival.
“This campaign is not about positions or personal gain. It is about service, character, and restoring the party’s moral compass,” he stated.
Ing. Agyepong also extended a symbolic invitation to former party member and independent political actor Alan Kyerematen, urging him to return to the NPP fold. He stressed that the party was built on the hard work and sacrifice of its founding members — values he believes must guide its future.
The NPP opened nominations for presidential aspirants on July 29, with candidates expected to file their nominations by August 28, 2025. Each aspirant is required to pay a non-refundable fee of GHS100,000. The party has scheduled its presidential primary for January 31, 2026.
Party General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who addressed the press during the nomination launch, used the opportunity to caution political opponents. He criticized recent attempts by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to politicize the ongoing chieftaincy tensions in Bawku — particularly during the build-up to the 2024 elections — describing such actions as unhelpful and divisive.
As the race for the NPP’s next flagbearer gathers momentum, Agyepong’s early declaration places him among the first to publicly join the contest. His campaign is expected to centre around a promise of internal renewal, credibility, and issue-based politics — themes he believes will resonate with both party delegates and the broader Ghanaian electorate.
