Interior Ministry to fully probe assassination attempt on Special Prosecutor

The Interior Ministry has ordered full investigations into claims of past assassination attempts on Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
The probe will also look at allegations of police brutality against a senior OSP official.
In a statement released on Monday, the Ministry said it has taken a “serious view” of the allegations, which were first mentioned publicly by the OSP’s Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications, Samuel Appiah Darko, during a television discussion on December 6.
On the programme, Appiah Darko claimed the Special Prosecutor had survived two assassination attempts and further alleged that he himself had been “handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel.”
In the statement, the Ministry cautioned that such allegations, if verified, pose significant risks to national security and efforts to strengthen state institutions.
“Such dangers to personnel of accountability institutions, if true, can undermine the government’s efforts to combat corruption,” the Ministry stated, adding that the claims demanded immediate action.
According to the Ministry, early engagements with Kissi Agyebeng suggest the alleged assassination attempts “happened before this year.”
However, authorities say there is no official record of any threat lodged with the police or any state security agency.
“There is no record or report of such threats against his life,” the statement noted.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has directed that two separate investigations be launched.
“Since crime does not expire, the Ministry has ordered a full-scale investigation into the claim of assassination attempts,” the statement emphasised.
In addition, a second probe will focus on Appiah Darko’s allegations that he was assaulted by a group of police officers.
The Ministry stressed that it will keep the public updated as the inquiries progress and make known any actions that may follow.
“The Ministry will update the public on the outcome of these investigations and the actions to be taken,” the statement assured.
It also reiterated its broader responsibility to protect citizens and uphold public confidence in the security system.
“The Ministry of Interior reiterates its commitment to protecting all lives and properties to ensure that all Ghanaians can conduct all their lawful affairs without any fear for their safety,” it said.
The allegations surfaced after Appiah Darko’s appearance on an Accra-based programme, where he claimed the Special Prosecutor had encountered two attempts on his life while performing his duties.
He also described an incident in which he said police assaulted him.
