Kpebu rules out interest in Special Prosecutor role

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu says he has no intention of succeeding Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, despite growing speculation following his recent dispute with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
He stated that although he expects to take up a public office role in the future, the OSP position is not one he desires.
“That is not the office I have dreamt about. It is clear that someday I will go into public office, it is very clear to me now, but not Special Prosecutor,” he said on JoyNews’ on Saturday, December 6.
His comments come amid claims that he is campaigning for Mr Agyebeng’s removal so he can take over the role, an assertion he strongly rejected. He argued that such claims were “paraphrased” and inconsistent with his public actions.
“Having led the charge in calling for him (Kissi Agyebeng) to go, I should not be the one to replace him,” he added.
Mr Kpebu also clarified the circumstances that led to his confrontation with OSP officers and subsequent detention.
He said the disagreement stemmed from his refusal to submit evidence supporting his corruption allegations to investigators who are subordinate to the Special Prosecutor.
According to him, any evidence he possesses can only be submitted to an independent authority without ties to Mr Agyebeng.
“There’s no law that states that I must present my evidence to subordinates. I made it clear to them, and the matter was closed,” he said on Channel One TV on Saturday.
He stressed that he would not return to the OSP if the request remains the same. “It has ended. I’m not going there again if it’s about presenting evidence. If a board is constituted and the board invites me, I will go.”
Mr Kpebu further disclosed that he intends to petition President John Dramani Mahama next week, urging him to remove the Special Prosecutor from office.
