Kabiru hints of legal action against the use of UP by Alan
Dr Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama
Dr Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, Member of Parliament for Walewale, has criticized Alan Kyerematen and his associates for naming their newly formed political party Unity Party (UP Plus).
He described it as an appropriation of the United Party (UP), from which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) traces its roots.
Speaking in an interview with Ghone TV, Dr Mahama said the choice of name shows little thought, given that UP is generally associated with the NPP. He revealed that the party is considering legal action over the issue.
“I thought Alan Kyerematen and his people would have been more thoughtful in choosing a name… We shall test it in court,” he stressed.
Kyerematen, a former NPP stalwart, broke away in 2023 and formed a political movement, the Movement for Change, with which he contested the 2024 General Elections. That movement has now become a political party, the Unity Party (UP Plus).
Ghana’s political landscape has entered a new phase with the launch of the United Party (UP), led by Alan Kyerematen, along with Boniface Abubakar Saddique and Yaw Buaben Asamoa as key founding members. The party was officially unveiled at the Coconut Grove Hotel in Accra on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
At the event, Kyerematen described the formation of the United Party as “the dawn of a new era and a people’s movement to unite the nation beyond partisan divides.” He told supporters, “Today, we lift Ghana UP, united in purpose, driven by integrity, and committed to prosperity for all. This is not just the birth of a party but the beginning of a movement that puts Ghana first.”
The United Party received its provisional certification from the Electoral Commission on October 3 and aims to challenge Ghana’s long-standing two-party dominance by the NPP and NDC.
Kyerematen outlined the party’s long-term agenda, the “Paradise Project,” a Vision 2040 blueprint to make Ghana the “economic powerhouse of Africa within fifteen years.” Anchored on his Great Transformational Plan (GTP), the vision focuses on industrialization, private sector growth, youth employment, debt reduction, and good governance.
He emphasized that the United Party stands for ethical leadership, meritocracy, and zero tolerance for corruption, with the Monarch Butterfly as its emblem, symbolizing transformation and resilience. The party’s colours — yellow, black, and white — represent Ghana’s gold wealth, the Black Star of Africa, and purity of purpose.
