Mahama launches 90-day operation to clear one million tonnes of Agbogbloshie waste

President John Dramani Mahama has launched a 90-day exercise to evacuate an estimated one million tonnes of accumulated waste from Agbogbloshie in Accra.

The waste will be transported to the Adepa Engineered Landfill Site near Nsawam in the Eastern Region for controlled disposal, compaction and covering.

The operation is being led by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP).

A drone-assisted artificial intelligence assessment was used to estimate the volume of waste at about one million tonnes.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama said government was deploying DRIP equipment, including tipper trucks, excavators, bulldozers and wheel loaders, to tackle the longstanding sanitation challenge.

“We are deploying heavy equipment which was secured under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), including tipper trucks, excavators, bulldozers, and wheel loaders to confront this longstanding national challenge.”

The Ghana Armed Forces, particularly the 48 Engineers Regiment, is also supporting the exercise.

The President said the clean-up is part of a broader plan to reclaim and redevelop the area under the proposed Agbogbloshie Urban Renewal Project.

He urged residents to cooperate with the military, DRIP operators and assembly teams during the exercise.
