Mahama launches e-visa on Africa Day

President John Dramani Mahama has launched Ghana’s first electronic visa (e-Visa) service on Africa Day to simplify travel and strengthen immigration systems.
The initiative is expected to reduce visa processing delays, improve efficiency and support easier movement into Ghana.
“The days of long delays and unnecessary paperwork must give way to efficiency, transparency, and speed,” he said.
Speaking at the launch, President Mahama said the initiative demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to using technology to improve public service delivery and deepen continental integration.
“This initiative reflects our determination to position Ghana as a forward-looking nation that leverages technology to improve governance, facilitate legitimate travel, deepen continental integration and strengthen national security,” he stated.
He explained that the e-Visa system would make travel into Ghana more efficient while ensuring that immigration authorities have better tools to manage entry and monitor movement across borders.
He stressed that, the importance of innovation in governance, saying, “We cannot build the Ghana we want using outdated systems. Technology must drive how we serve our people and how we engage with the world.”
He also linked the initiative to Africa Day, noting that it aligns with efforts to promote unity and easier movement across the continent.
“On a day like this, we are reminded that Africa’s progress depends on integration. This system is a step in that direction,” he added.
The launch forms part of Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at modernising public services and improving efficiency in governance.
Government officials say the platform will also support tourism, trade and investment by making Ghana more accessible to global travellers while maintaining strong security safeguards.
