Mahama names Ato Forson, Armah-Kofi Buah to act as Defence, Environment Ministers

President John Dramani Mahama has made temporary ministerial assignments following the deaths of two cabinet ministers in the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President directed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to assume additional responsibility as Minister for Defence, effective immediately.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, has also been appointed to oversee the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology in an acting capacity.
The interim appointments come in the wake of the passing of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former Minister for Defence, and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology. The two were among eight individuals who lost their lives when a Ghana Air Force helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District. The delegation was en route to Obuasi for the launch of a government-backed programme on responsible and sustainable mining.
According to the Presidency, the reassignments are necessary to ensure continuity in key sectors of government as the country mourns the loss of senior officials.
A formal investigation into the cause of the helicopter crash has been launched by the Ghana Armed Forces in collaboration with civil aviation authorities.
Meanwhile, national mourning continues across the country, with all flags flying at half-mast. President Mahama is expected to lead a national tribute in honour of the deceased, while preparations for state funerals are underway. Further details on the funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
