NPP mourns victims of military helicopter crash, calls for swift investigation

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed profound grief over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including top government officials, in the Ashanti Region.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 6, 2025, the NPP described the incident as a devastating blow not only to the bereaved families but to the entire nation. The party extended its deepest condolences to the families affected and called for unity and prayer during this period of national mourning.

“Their passing is not only a devastating blow to their families but also a profound loss to the entire nation they worked to protect and build,” the statement read.

The party further called for a “thorough, transparent, and swift investigation” into the cause of the crash, emphasizing that the dignity of the victims’ lives demands answers and accountability to prevent a recurrence.

### Background

The tragic incident occurred in the morning of Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. Aboard the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter were high-ranking officials en route to Obuasi. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft lost contact and later crashed, leaving all eight on board dead.

The deceased include the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. Also killed were Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC. The three crew members who lost their lives were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Images from the crash site captured by Citi News showed the charred remains of victims as emergency services scrambled to manage the aftermath. The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing.

The NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, who signed the statement, urged all Ghanaians to stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased and support one another through prayer and compassion.

“May the souls of these eight heroes rest in perfect peace until the last day of the Resurrection, when we shall meet again,” the statement concluded.
