Minority donates GH¢100,000 to Black Queens in honour of WAFCON feat

Members of the Minority in Parliament have donated a cash amount of GH¢100,000 to the Black Queens.
This they say is in recognition of their outstanding performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The donation was made during a courtesy call by the senior national women’s team to Parliament on Tuesday, July 29, following their return from Morocco, where they secured a bronze medal at the continental competition.
Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, led the presentation on behalf of the caucus, describing the gesture as a show of encouragement and appreciation for the team’s resilience and renewed promise on the African football stage.
“This is a token of our admiration for what the Black Queens have done for Ghana. Their achievement is not just a win in football terms, but a powerful signal of the potential and spirit of Ghanaian women,” he said.

Ghana’s third-place finish came after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over South Africa, following a tightly contested battle in the third-place match. The result marked Ghana’s first WAFCON medal since 2016, restoring hope after two difficult tournament cycles — including a group stage exit as hosts in 2018 and missing qualification entirely in 2022.
The Queens’ journey to the podium was widely praised, with many hailing their mental fortitude and tactical evolution throughout the tournament.
Their bronze-medal performance, along with standout individual showings — including Grace Asantewaa and captain Portia Boakye being named in the Team of the Tournament — has reignited national enthusiasm around women’s football in Ghana.
The team has since embarked on a series of post-tournament activities, including national engagements and commemorative visits.
