#OccupyBoG demo: We’ll demonstrate until Addison, deputies resign – Protestors
The Occupy Bank of Ghana (BoG) #OccupyBoG organizers have promised to stage endless protests if Dr. Ernest Addison, governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), and his appointees do not resign.
They announced this during the ongoing demonstration against what they say is improper Central Bank administration.
The demonstration is being coordinated by several other groups and Minority Members of Parliament (MPs).
According to the demonstrators, Dr Addison and his deputies of have totally mismanaged the Central Bank and they mentioned the over GHc60 billion loss by the Bank of Ghana as the basis for their call for their resignation.
The demonstrators numbered close 150,000 people turned out to partake in the Occupy Bank of Ghana demonstration were from various parts of the country, Volta, Ashanti, Eastern among other regions.
The demonstrators also matched to the site of the new building being constructed by the Bank of Ghana and have vowed that until the Governor Dr. Ernest Addision comes out to receive the petition they will come back and stage a demonstration again.
“Governor Addison, printing of money is like alcoholism. The perceived good effect comes immediately, and the hangover comes after the party. You printed money to finance the champagne lifestyle on akpeteshie budget of the Akufo Addo/ Bawumia Government. Today, Ghana is on its knees!” the Minority Leader in Parliament, Cassiel Ato Forson
Addressing the media during the demonstration Mr. Ato Forson stated that the governor is “a printer and we all know what printing does: Printing of money is like alcoholism — the perceived good effect comes immediately and the hangover comes after the party”
“In fact, Governor Addison printed for President Akufo-Addo for them to live a champagne lifestyle on an akpeteshie budget.
“We can’t continue this way. Today, look at what is happening to our economy. Ghanaians are struggling, finding it difficult to survive. In fact, some are struggling to eat three times in a day.
“We can’t continue this way. We want this government out. The Governor must go and the president must be allowed to appoint a new set of Bank of Ghana team”, Dr Forson added.
“Kennedy Agyapong has confirmed: looting of public funds by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia gov’t, their party. He says, “The way the NPP is looting this country, you will think there is no tomorrow. You steal all this money and stash same abroad, what do you mean?” Dr. Clement Apaak stated in a tweet.
However, the Ghana Police Service has refuted media reports that there was confusion during #OccupyBoG demonstration when the protestors wanted to present their petition to the Bank of Ghana Governor.
The response from the Police follow media news in circulation on both social and traditional media that there was some level of confusion after the police formed a barricade to prevent protestors from heading to the Bank of Ghana.
In brief statement from the Ghana Police Service said “We wish to strongly encourage the public to disregard this misinformation, as there has not been any confusion whatsoever since the beginning of the demonstration and we look forward to having a very peaceful demonstration at the end of the day.”
