Okada rider dies after hit-and-run involving trotro at Tetegu

The commercial bus driver fled the scene after the crash.
An okada rider lost his life in a hit-and-run crash with a commercial bus, locally called a trotro, at Tetegu on the Accra–Kasoa highway.
The incident happened around 6 p.m. when the speeding bus collided with the motorcycle, which had a passenger on board.
The force of the impact killed the rider instantly, while his passenger survived but sustained serious injuries. Eyewitnesses recounted that the trotro driver, though aware of the casualties, sped off immediately after the crash.
Police officers later moved the rider’s body to the mortuary and rushed the injured passenger to the hospital for treatment.
Colleagues of the deceased, who operated his motorcycle transport service at Old Barrier along the Kasoa road, described him as a hardworking man. They said his death was a needless tragedy and blamed it on what they called the recklessness of a hit-and-run driver.
A commercial bus traveling from Accra to Sefwi Asawinso with registration number GE-8264-19 caught fire around 7:50 a.m. on Thursday morning.
All passengers survived, though several personal belongings were destroyed in the blaze.
Some passengers told reporters that they noticed smoke coming from the back seat of the vehicle and immediately alerted the driver. However, they alleged that he initially refused to stop. The driver later explained that a torn fan belt had sparked the fire, but declined to provide further details on camera.
Western North Regional Fire Commander, ACFO Philip Kudzo Amagnoh, told AKOMA FM that the firefighting effort was hampered because the only functioning fire tender dispatched to the scene broke down on its way.
“This incident shows the urgent need for the government to provide our command with adequate logistics to handle emergencies,” ACFO Amagnoh stressed.
He added that the absence of reliable equipment could have worsened the situation, but quick action by passengers prevented any casualties.
