Otumfuor concludes Bawku mediation

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged leaders of the Mamprusi and Kusasi factions to prepare their supporters for a permanent end to violence in the Bawku Traditional Area, according to a statement issued after Monday’s joint meeting at the Manhyia Palace.
The press release, signed by the Asantehene’s Chief of Staff, Kofi Badu, said His Majesty reminded both sides that they are “one people” and encouraged them to help “put an end permanently to violence and disorder in their communities.” The statement followed a landmark face-to-face engagement held on December 1, 2025, in the Jubilee Hall.
The meeting brought together a 30-member delegation led by Chief Tarana John Wuni Grunah for the Naayiri, Overlord of Mamprugu, and another delegation led by Naba Tambis Baalug of Pusiga for the Bawku Naaba and the Kusasi community. Former MP Cletus Avoka spoke for the Kusasi side, while Dr. Issah represented the Mamprusi faction.
According to the palace, both delegations emphasised their shared heritage and acknowledged the senselessness of the conflict, which has caused years of insecurity, deaths and the displacement of residents across the Bawku Traditional Area. The release noted that the Asantehene appreciated the “civility and maturity” shown by both sides throughout the mediation process.
The statement explained that the Asantehene had spent months holding separate consultations with each faction before convening the final joint session aimed at securing a lasting resolution.
It added that His Majesty is compiling a detailed report with his proposals for President John Dramani Mahama.
His Majesty announced that he would submit his report with his proposals to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama in the next few days, the release said, expressing the hope that the President will “act expeditiously” to convene a formal meeting to announce the outcome of the mediation.
The palace indicated that both sides left the session with a renewed sense of responsibility toward promoting calm, dialogue and reconciliation in the Bawku Traditional Area.
