Police detail arrest of Sir Obama Pokuase, two others

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of three individuals, including popular social media personality Daniel Adomako, known as “Sir Obama Pokuase,” over alleged illegal possession of weapons, death threats, and the circulation of false information.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 13, Director of Public Affairs, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said Mr Adomako was picked up in an intelligence-led operation after police intercepted images and videos of individuals brandishing sophisticated weapons. He is assisting investigators in establishing the source and legality of the firearms displayed.
The police said the operation forms part of an ongoing national security effort to clamp down on illegal arms possession and public display of weapons, which have been linked to violent crimes. Similar intelligence-led raids have, in recent weeks, recovered a significant quantity of arms and ammunition.
Two other individuals, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiw, have also been arrested in connection with alleged death threats and the spread of false information following the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District, which killed eight people, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The police maintain that such actions undermine public safety and national cohesion, especially in moments of national grief. All suspects, according to the statement, are in custody and will be processed for court after investigations are concluded.
The arrests, however, have drawn sharp condemnation from the National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). In a statement signed by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, the group expressed “shock and disdain” over what it described as the waste of security resources on detaining “harmless youth” for social media comments. The statement accused the police of selective enforcement, citing recent violent attacks on NPP members, including Deputy National Organiser Hawa Koomson, which allegedly went unpunished.
The NPP Youth Wing argued that the comments made by the suspects, while possibly unsavoury, were opinions protected under the constitutional right to free speech, and called for their “unconditional and immediate release.”
