Police restore calm after student protest at Tamale Technical University

Calm has returned to the Tamale Technical University after the Northern Regional Police Command intervened to quell an unlawful demonstration staged by students on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
According to the police, the protest began around 9:00 a.m. when about 500 students massed up in front of the school’s administration block.
The Northern Regional Police Command said intelligence gathered earlier had warned of possible unrest, and a team was quickly dispatched to the campus when the situation escalated.
“The demonstrating students had set ablaze vehicle tyres at the main entrance of the school, in the direction of TAMASCO, and also in front of the Police Post at Kalpasi, as well as the Administration block,” the statement signed by Regional Police PRO C/Inspr. Luckman Niendow Alhassan explained.
Police indicated that efforts to restore calm were met with aggression.
“The students became aggressive upon seeing the Police and started pelting stones, which resulted in three students sustaining injuries as well as three Police Officers who are currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” the statement added.
The police further stressed that despite the intensity of the clashes, no property was destroyed.
“No damage to school properties and Police facilities were recorded,” the statement confirmed.
The Command emphasized that the intervention helped to avoid further chaos.
“The team managed to bring the situation under control and restored calm to the school,” the statement said. It also noted that a temporary police presence has been stationed on campus “to avert any recurrence.”
Police authorities used the incident to urge restraint and dialogue from students.
“We want to remind students that while grievances are legitimate, resorting to violence endangers lives and undermines peace on campus,” the Regional PRO cautioned.
The Northern Regional Police Command assured that investigations into the cause of the protest are ongoing and that officers will continue to work with university management to maintain order.
