Six people have been killed and two others injured in an armed attack on the Chenchire community near Mandari in the Bole District of the Savannah Region.
The armed attack, which struck Chenchire on Thursday, August 28, 2025, forced residents to abandon their homes as panic spread through the community. The incident has left Chenchire deserted, with terrified villagers fleeing into the bush for safety.
Police say the attack on Chenchire was so severe that it took hours before residents gathered the courage to return and assist officers in locating the six people who had been killed and the two who sustained serious injuries.
According to a statement issued by the Savannah Regional Police Headquarters, a team led by the Bole Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Alex Adjeivie, was dispatched after reports of the assault reached the police around 2:00 p.m.
On arrival, officers discovered six bodies scattered in different directions across the community. The deceased have been identified as Nyor Nyawile, aged about 70; Nyoropor Nanii Nuuro, 55; Sachera, 71; Namii Tsipor, 80; and Kwabena Bogara, 29. Two other residents, Sansah Sinkpe, 80, and Sansah Boonie, 43, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Bole District Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased have since been conveyed to the Damongo Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Savannah Regional Police Command says investigations are underway to determine the cause of the armed attack and to bring the perpetrators to justice. Police have also assured residents of increased patrols in the area to restore calm.
This latest armed attack comes despite repeated assurances from the police of a clampdown on armed robbery and violent crime in the Savannah Region.
Meanwhile, the Minister for the Interior, acting on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has announced a review of curfew hours in three conflict-prone areas of the country. The new directive takes effect from Monday, August 18, 2025.
In the Upper East Region, curfew hours for the Bawku Municipality and its environs have been set from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am. Similarly, Binduri Township and its surrounding communities will observe the same curfew hours. In the North East Region, Nalerigu Township and its environs in the East Mamprusi Municipality will also be under curfew from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am.
Government urged Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and the general public in these areas to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them, and to resort to non-violent means in resolving disputes in order to promote peace and stability.
