Tempane MP condemns violent clashes in Kongo

Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba
Member of Parliament for Tempane Constituency and Minister for Public Sector Reforms, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has expressed deep concern over a violent conflict that erupted in the Kongo community on Friday, August 2, 2025.
The clash, reportedly between members of the Bimoba and Fulani communities, stemmed from a land ownership dispute. The incident, which occurred in a previously peaceful area within the Tempane Constituency, led to the burning of homes and left several individuals injured.
In an official statement released on Saturday, Hon. Akanvariba described the development as “unfortunate and regrettable,” stressing that such acts of violence have no place in society and must be addressed decisively.
“Our communities have long been known for coexistence, mutual respect, and shared values of peace and tolerance,” the MP stated. “It is therefore distressing that such a misunderstanding could escalate into destruction of property and bodily harm.”
Hon. Akanvariba extended her heartfelt sympathies to individuals and families affected by the violence, particularly those who lost their homes or sustained injuries. She assured them of her unwavering support during what she called a “difficult period.”
While security and traditional authorities have begun investigations into the matter, the Tempane legislator urged residents of Kongo to remain calm and avoid any retaliatory actions that could worsen tensions. She called for dialogue and peaceful resolution as the only viable path forward.
“Dialogue, not violence, must be our path forward,” she emphasized. “May this moment serve as a call for unity, not division.”
Hon. Akanvariba also reaffirmed her commitment to working closely with the Tempane District Assembly, traditional leaders, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure lasting peace, justice, and reconciliation in the community.
The MP’s call comes as local leaders and security agencies mobilize efforts to restore calm to prevent further escalation.
