Woman charged with manslaughter over alleged acid attack on boyfriend

A 25-year-old woman has been charged with manslaughter following an alleged acid attack on her boyfriend that later led to his death.
The Koforidua High Court in the Eastern Region is set to handle the manslaughter trial of Vera Asare, who is accused of pouring a substance suspected to be acid on her boyfriend, 27-year-old Daniel Omane. The incident reportedly took place on November 29, 2024, at Bonya in the New Juaben South Municipality.
According to investigators, the acid attack left Omane with life-threatening injuries, forcing him to undergo months of medical care at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. Despite efforts to save him, he died on July 25, 2025, leading to manslaughter charges being filed against Asare.
The case first appeared before the District Magistrate Court in Koforidua, presided over by Her Worship Nana Ama Depaa Fynn, Esq., but was referred to the High Court since manslaughter cases are beyond the jurisdiction of the lower court. Investigations by the Eastern Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) confirmed that the substance used in the attack was indeed acidic.
Prosecutors explained that had Omane died instantly after the assault, the accused would have faced a murder charge. However, because his death occurred several months later, the charge was amended to manslaughter. The High Court has scheduled hearings to begin on October 13, with Asare currently on remand awaiting trial.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased is demanding justice. His elder brother, Emmanuel Kofi Boateng, said the loss has been devastating and urged the court to act decisively. “Daniel cannot be brought back, but justice will bring closure for the family and serve as a warning to others,” he said.
Omane is survived by a three-year-old daughter he had with the accused. Relatives say the child has been left emotionally distressed, with both parents now absent from her life. The family has called for support while pressing for accountability in court.
