Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager on a four-year contract set to begin in July.
Speaking after his appointment, Alonso expressed excitement about the new challenge, describing Chelsea as one of the biggest clubs in world football.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football, and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” He said.
The 44-year-old Spaniard joins the London club after leaving Spanish giants Real Madrid by mutual consent in January, ending his stay less than eight months into a three-year deal.
Alonso arrives at Stamford Bridge with a growing reputation as one of Europe’s brightest coaches, having enjoyed a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen.
During his three years in charge, he guided the German side to their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2024 and also lifted the German Cup.
His appointment comes just a day after Chelsea suffered defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, as the club seeks stability following another turbulent season on the managerial front.
The Blues have had two permanent managers this season, with Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior both taking charge at different stages, while Calum McFarlane remains in his second spell as interim manager and will oversee Chelsea’s final two Premier League matches.
He added that discussions with the club’s ownership and sporting leadership showed a shared ambition to build a team capable of consistently competing at the highest level and winning trophies.
“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies,” he stated.
Before moving into management, Alonso enjoyed a glittering playing career, spending five years at Liverpool F.C., where he helped the club win the UEFA Champions League in 2005. He also featured Real Sociedad, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
On the international stage, Alonso earned 114 caps for Spain national football team, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and two UEFA European Championship titles.
