Jean Mensa’s deputies at EC out, Mahama to make appointments in due course

President John Dramani Mahama will appoint new deputy chairpersons to the Electoral Commission following the exit of two top officials, the government has announced.
Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed on Monday that Deputy EC Chairperson Dr. Bossman Eric Asare has formally resigned, while fellow Deputy Chairperson Samuel Tettey has retired.
Speaking to journalists, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said Dr. Bossman Asare had informed President John Dramani Mahama that he would step down effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana.
“Regarding Dr. Bossman Asare, I can also confirm that he has submitted a letter to His Excellency the President indicating that effective 31st July 2026, he would resign his position as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission,” he said.
He added that the outgoing official had explained his reasons for leaving office.
“He gives a reason for his resignation which is that he wants to go back to academia and pursue his career as a staff of the University of Ghana and conveyed his thanks and appreciation to the President and people of Ghana for giving him the opportunity to serve in that capacity,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated.
The development follows widespread speculation over the weekend, with many questioning reports suggesting changes were imminent at the Electoral Commission.
Dr. Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey served as deputies to EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and were part of the leadership team that supervised the 2024 presidential election, which saw the opposition National Democratic Congress return to power after eight years.
The minister disclosed that a replacement process for Mr. Tettey is already underway.
“Indeed, the Council of State has already been given a nominee whom they are considering, and once that process is completed, an announcement will be made in terms of the replacement for Mr. Tettey,” he said.
He further indicated that the government would later initiate a separate process to replace Dr. Bossman Asare.
“In due course, a replacement will be found for Dr. Bossman Asare, so I can confirm the resignation of these two people,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu added.
The appointments will be among the first major changes President Mahama makes to the Electoral Commission’s top leadership since returning to office.
